New Delhi, 25 September 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the transformation of rural India, stating that infrastructure development in villages has significantly improved and the gap between urban and rural areas has narrowed over the past years. His remarks came during an interaction with participants of the ‘Seva Yatra’ motorcycle rally travelling between Varanasi and Vadnagar.
The Prime Minister emphasised that improved connectivity, better public facilities and expanding opportunities have changed the way people in rural areas access services, education, healthcare and markets. He also pointed towards increased participation of women in economic activities and community development initiatives.
Rural Connectivity Becomes A Major Development Focus
Infrastructure development has remained a key focus area for India’s villages, with roads, electricity access, digital networks and housing projects playing an important role in improving daily life. Better road connectivity has helped farmers, small businesses and rural entrepreneurs reach wider markets and access essential services more efficiently.
The expansion of digital infrastructure has also changed how rural citizens interact with government services, banking facilities and online platforms. Digital payments, online education and telemedicine services have created new opportunities for communities that were earlier limited by geographical barriers.
The Prime Minister highlighted that villages today have improved infrastructure compared with previous years, reducing the traditional divide between cities and rural regions.
Women’s Participation In Rural Economy Expands
During the interaction, PM Modi also highlighted the rise of self-reliance among women since 2014. Women-led self-help groups, small enterprises and local businesses have become an important part of rural economic activity.
Across many states, women’s groups are involved in agriculture-related businesses, handicrafts, food processing and service-based activities. These initiatives have contributed to financial inclusion by encouraging more women to participate in entrepreneurship and community-level economic development.
The growth of digital banking and financial access has further supported women entrepreneurs by making transactions and government support programs easier to access.
Technology Is Changing India’s Villages
Technology adoption has become a major driver of rural transformation. Internet connectivity, digital platforms and technology-based services are helping villages participate more actively in India’s growing economy.
Farmers are increasingly using digital tools for weather information, market updates and agricultural guidance. Small businesses are also adopting online platforms to expand their customer base beyond local markets.
The combination of physical infrastructure and digital infrastructure is creating a new development model where rural areas are becoming connected with national and global opportunities.
Infrastructure Development And Future Growth
Experts and policymakers have often linked rural infrastructure with long-term economic growth because villages contribute significantly to agriculture, consumption and small-scale industries.
Improved transport networks can support supply chains, while better connectivity can encourage investment in rural enterprises. Development of healthcare, education and skill-building facilities is also considered important for creating employment opportunities outside major cities.
States across India continue to announce infrastructure initiatives focused on roads, irrigation, healthcare facilities and rural development. Haryana, for example, recently outlined plans for additional rural infrastructure investment covering areas such as roads, irrigation, education and healthcare.
A Changing Rural India
The focus on rural infrastructure reflects a broader shift in India’s development approach, where villages are increasingly viewed as important contributors to economic growth rather than only beneficiaries of government programs.
With improved connectivity, digital access and growing entrepreneurship, rural India continues to undergo significant changes. The government’s emphasis on infrastructure aims to create stronger links between villages, cities and emerging economic opportunities.
PM Modi’s remarks underline the continuing focus on transforming rural areas through connectivity, technology and inclusive development.
