The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts after a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kalingapatnam, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough sea conditions across parts of eastern India. The weather system made landfall between the night of September 23 and early hours of September 24, 2026, affecting coastal Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha regions.
The deep depression developed over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and moved west-northwestwards toward the coast. Before landfall, the system was located close to the north Andhra Pradesh coast near Kalingapatnam, with IMD forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several affected districts.
Landfall Near Kalingapatnam Triggers Weather Warnings
According to IMD updates, the deep depression crossed the coast near Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam region while maintaining its intensity for several hours after landfall. The system was accompanied by strong winds reaching around 55–65 kmph with gusts up to 75 kmph, creating difficult conditions along coastal areas.
The weather department warned that the system would continue moving inland while gradually weakening. However, heavy rainfall associated with the depression was expected to continue across parts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and neighbouring regions.
Authorities in coastal districts increased preparedness measures, including monitoring low-lying areas, checking drainage systems and keeping emergency response teams ready.
Heavy Rainfall Alert For Odisha And Nearby States
Odisha remained one of the key regions under the impact of the weather system. The IMD warned of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places on September 24, followed by heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha over the following days.
Several districts prepared for possible waterlogging, flooding and disruption due to intense rainfall. Local administrations issued precautionary advisories, while some areas announced temporary closures of schools and educational institutions as a safety measure.
Coastal areas also experienced rough sea conditions, and authorities advised fishermen to avoid venturing into affected parts of the Bay of Bengal until conditions improved.
Impact On Transport And Daily Life
Heavy rainfall and strong winds caused disruptions in some coastal districts, including waterlogging and challenges for road connectivity. Officials monitored vulnerable locations where excessive rainfall could affect normal movement and public infrastructure.
Residents in affected areas were advised to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
Railway and road authorities also remained on alert to manage possible weather-related disruptions. Emergency teams were positioned to respond to incidents such as flooding, fallen trees and damage to local infrastructure.
Deep Depression Expected To Weaken Gradually
The IMD indicated that the system would continue moving northwestwards after crossing the coast and gradually lose strength due to interaction with land. While the intensity of the wind system was expected to decrease, rainfall activity could continue over several regions as the system moves inland.
Meteorologists noted that rainfall from such systems can still have significant impacts even after landfall, especially in areas with saturated soil, poor drainage or vulnerable infrastructure.
Authorities Continue Monitoring Situation
State governments in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha continued monitoring the situation through disaster management agencies and district administrations. Relief and emergency teams were kept prepared in areas likely to experience heavy rainfall.
The latest weather development highlights the importance of early warnings and coordinated disaster preparedness during India’s monsoon season. With IMD tracking the movement of the system closely, authorities are focusing on reducing risks to people, infrastructure and agriculture in affected regions.
