Guwahati, September 21, 2026: Assam has taken a major step in expanding its power infrastructure after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for Adani Power’s 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant at Chapar in Dhubri district. The project involves an investment of approximately ₹48,000 crore and is expected to become one of the largest power-generation assets in Northeast India once operational.
Four 800 MW Units Planned at Chapar
The Chapar power plant will consist of four generating units of 800 MW each, giving the facility a total capacity of 3,200 MW. The project will use ultra-supercritical technology, designed to operate at higher temperatures and pressures than conventional thermal power plants and improve generation efficiency. Adani Power has also said the plant will incorporate high-efficiency systems and modern environmental safeguards.
Commissioning is planned in phases beginning December 2030. Once completed, the plant is expected to provide electricity for households, commercial establishments and industries across Assam, strengthening the state’s overall power-generation capacity.
The project is being developed as part of a broader expansion of Assam’s energy infrastructure, with the state positioning itself as an emerging power hub for the Northeast.
Up to 20,000 Construction Jobs Expected
Employment is a major component of the project. According to Adani Power, the plant could generate up to 20,000 jobs during the construction phase and around 5,000 jobs once operational. The project is also expected to create business opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, transport operators and service providers.
At the foundation-stone ceremony, Adani Group Director Jeet Adani said the project would bring together workers, engineers, technicians, contractors and suppliers while creating opportunities for local businesses.
The Economic Times reported that preliminary recruitment drives connected with Adani’s activities in Assam have already resulted in approximately 4,500 local youth being hired, according to Jeet Adani.
Part of ₹63,000 Crore Energy Investment
The ₹48,000-crore thermal power plant is part of a larger ₹63,000-crore power investment planned by the Adani Group in Assam. The wider investment includes two pumped-storage projects through Adani Green Energy with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW.
Across sectors including power, aviation and cement, the group has said its investments in Assam will exceed ₹80,000 crore. The broader programme is expected to create infrastructure, employment and commercial opportunities across the state over the coming years.
The investment follows earlier agreements between the Assam government and Adani Group companies and represents the transition of the proposed power project from planning into physical construction.
Assam Targets Bigger Role in Northeast Energy
The project comes as Assam seeks to strengthen its position as an industrial and energy centre in Northeast India. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the project would generate employment, increase economic activity and provide opportunities for local industries and enterprises.
For Adani Power, the Chapar project represents a major expansion of its presence in the Northeast. For Assam, the plant is expected to add substantial generation capacity while supporting industrial and commercial electricity demand.
With construction now moving forward and commissioning scheduled to begin from December 2030, the ₹48,000-crore project is set to become a major component of Assam’s long-term power infrastructure.
