New Delhi, September 19, 2026: Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is set to reopen its third runway from September 20, nearly seven months after it was closed for extensive rehabilitation and modernization work. The reopening of Runway 11R/29L is expected to strengthen the airport’s operational capacity and improve the efficiency of aircraft movements.
The runway was taken out of service in February 2026 for a major upgrade programme. During the closure, extensive work was undertaken on the runway surface, pavement, lighting systems and associated taxiway infrastructure. The project was aimed at improving the runway’s long-term reliability and preparing the airport to handle increasing aviation demand.
Major Rehabilitation Work Completed
The rehabilitation involved strengthening and resurfacing the runway after years of regular operational use. The airport said the work also included improvements to airfield ground lighting and other critical systems required for safe aircraft operations.
A major addition to the upgraded infrastructure is the Rapid Exit Taxiway RET Z1, which is designed to allow aircraft to leave the runway more quickly after landing. Faster runway clearance can help reduce runway occupancy time and support smoother aircraft movements, particularly during periods of high traffic.
A permanent threshold displacement was also carried out on Runway 29L as part of the project. Various civil, electrical and airside works were completed during the seven-month closure.
Reopening to Strengthen Airport Operations
The return of the runway comes at an important time for Delhi’s aviation sector. IGI Airport is among India’s busiest airports, handling a large volume of domestic and international passenger traffic every day.
With the third runway returning to service, airport authorities will have greater flexibility in managing aircraft movements across the airport’s runway network. The upgraded infrastructure is also expected to support more efficient aircraft operations and improve operational resilience.
The airport operator has worked with aviation authorities, air traffic control, airlines and other stakeholders during the rehabilitation programme. Necessary inspections and regulatory procedures were completed before the runway was cleared for recommissioning.
Focus on Future Aviation Demand
Delhi Airport has been expanding its infrastructure to accommodate the long-term growth of passenger and aircraft traffic. The airport currently has an annual passenger-handling capacity of more than 100 million, with further expansion planned.
The third runway’s modernization forms part of this wider infrastructure strategy. Rather than simply restoring the runway to its previous condition, the rehabilitation programme introduced upgraded systems intended to improve its performance over the coming years.
The addition of the rapid-exit taxiway is particularly significant because quicker aircraft clearance can contribute to more efficient use of runway capacity. Enhanced lighting and other airfield systems are also expected to support safe operations under different weather and visibility conditions.
Runway Set for September 20 Operations
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which operates IGI Airport, confirmed that Runway 11R/29L will become operational from September 20 after completion of the required procedures.
DIAL CEO Pradeep Panicker said the reopening represents an important milestone in strengthening Delhi Airport’s infrastructure for future aviation requirements. The upgraded runway and associated facilities are expected to improve operational efficiency while supporting the airport’s growing traffic needs.
After seven months of rehabilitation, the return of the third runway will restore an important part of Delhi Airport’s airside network. For airlines and airport operators, the upgraded facility is expected to provide additional operational flexibility as passenger and aircraft volumes continue to grow.
