Nearly two decades after the infamous Nithari killings case shook the country, Surendra Koli, who was once sentenced to death in multiple cases before being acquitted, was found dead in Haridwar on September 18, 2026. Koli’s death has brought renewed attention to one of India’s most controversial criminal cases, which involved years of investigations, court battles and multiple verdicts.
2006: Nithari Case Comes Into National Spotlight
The case emerged in December 2006 after the discovery of human remains near a drain behind businessman Moninder Singh Pandher’s house in Nithari village, Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The discovery followed reports of missing children and young women from the area, leading to a major investigation by local authorities and later the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Surendra Koli, who worked as domestic help at Pandher’s residence, and Pandher were arrested during the investigation. The case attracted widespread public attention because of the nature of the allegations and the large number of victims linked to the investigation.
2009–2019: Multiple Convictions and Death Sentences
During the trial process, Koli was convicted in several cases connected to the Nithari killings. Courts awarded him multiple death sentences in different cases, making him one of the most frequently sentenced death-row prisoners in India. Reports indicate that Koli received 12 death sentences across various cases during the long legal proceedings.
The cases moved through different levels of the judicial system, including trial courts, the Allahabad High Court and the Supreme Court. Over the years, several legal questions emerged regarding evidence, investigation procedures and the strength of individual cases.
2023–2025: Convictions Overturned and Acquittal
A major turning point came when the Allahabad High Court acquitted Koli and Pandher in several cases, citing issues related to evidence and investigation. Later, the Supreme Court upheld Koli’s acquittal, leaving him cleared in the final case connected to the Nithari killings.
After spending years in prison, Koli walked out following the court decisions. His release marked a dramatic shift in a case where he had previously faced repeated death sentences.
2026: Life After Acquittal Ends in Haridwar
After his release, Koli reportedly moved to Haridwar and started running a small tea stall. On September 18, 2026, he was found dead at the tea stall. Police officials said the matter was under investigation.
His death has once again brought the Nithari case into public discussion, highlighting the long legal journey that moved from serious allegations and death sentences to eventual acquittals.
The Legacy of the Nithari Case
The Nithari killings remain one of India’s most closely followed criminal cases because of their scale, prolonged courtroom proceedings and the questions raised during the legal process. The case passed through nearly 20 years of investigations and trials, involving multiple judgments and appeals.
Surendra Koli’s journey — from being convicted and sentenced to death multiple times to being acquitted in all connected cases — represents one of the most unusual legal timelines in India’s criminal justice history.
