New Delhi, August 31, 2026: India Post has opened the registration process for 23,757 Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) vacancies under its 2026 Schedule-II recruitment, offering a major employment opportunity for candidates seeking government-linked postal jobs. The One-Time Registration (OTR) process began on August 31, while the online application process will start from September 2.
The recruitment drive covers positions including Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) and Dak Sevak across different postal circles in the country. Candidates interested in participating must complete the registration process within the specified deadline and then submit their applications during the separate application window.
According to the recruitment schedule, candidates can complete their One-Time Registration until September 19, 2026, at 5 pm. The online application and fee-payment window will open on September 2 and remain available until September 21 at 5 pm. A correction window will subsequently be provided on September 23 and 24.
One important point for applicants is that fresh registration is mandatory for this recruitment cycle. India Post has clarified that registration numbers generated during previous recruitment schedules will not be accepted for the current Schedule-II recruitment. Candidates who wish to apply must therefore complete a new registration, even if they have participated in earlier GDS recruitment drives.
The selection process is different from many traditional government recruitment examinations. Candidates will be shortlisted through a system-generated merit list based primarily on marks obtained in Class 10. For applicants whose marks are represented through grades or points, these will be converted into marks according to the prescribed process. The merit calculation can extend to four decimal places, allowing the system to rank candidates more precisely.
This means candidates do not have to appear for a separate written examination as part of the standard GDS selection process. However, meeting the eligibility requirements and entering accurate academic information is essential because the Class 10 record plays a central role in determining merit.
The application fee for candidates required to pay it has been fixed at ₹100. However, the fee is waived for several categories, including female candidates, Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) and transwomen applicants.
Applicants should also pay close attention to the information entered during registration. Details such as the candidate’s name, parents’ names, date of birth, gender and category are used in the application process. Candidates are advised to ensure that their personal and educational information matches their official records.
Document verification will also form an important part of the recruitment process. India Post has indicated that selected candidates’ documents may be verified through DigiLocker, API Setu and official education-board websites. Applicants should therefore ensure that relevant academic and category documents are available and updated where required.
The recruitment is expected to attract significant interest because GDS positions provide opportunities to work within India’s extensive postal network, particularly across rural and semi-urban areas. The Department of Posts continues to operate one of the country’s largest public service networks, making postal recruitment an important employment avenue for eligible candidates.
Candidates should avoid waiting until the final days to complete the process, particularly because registration and application submission are separate stages. Registration closes on September 19, while the final application deadline is September 21, 2026, at 5 pm.
With 23,757 vacancies available across postal circles, the 2026 GDS recruitment represents one of the year’s significant government employment opportunities. Candidates meeting the eligibility requirements should carefully read the official notification, complete fresh registration and submit their applications before the respective deadlines.
