A religious gathering turned tragic in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district on Monday, August 17, after a stampede-like incident at the Ashok Dham Temple left at least seven devotees dead and more than a dozen injured. The incident occurred during the third Monday of the holy Shravan month, when thousands of devotees had gathered to offer prayers and perform jalabhishek to Lord Shiva. Most of those who died were women, according to officials.
Panic Erupts Amid Heavy Devotee Rush
The incident took place early in the morning along the route connecting Ashok Dham railway station with the temple. A large number of devotees had already gathered in queues when panic suddenly spread through the crowd. Preliminary accounts indicate that an electricity pole fell near the route, after which rumours circulated that a live wire had come into contact with people.
The rumour reportedly triggered fear among devotees, particularly those standing in the women’s queue. As people attempted to move away quickly, the pressure within the crowd increased. Barricading eventually gave way, causing several devotees to fall and others to tumble over them. Police officials said the exact sequence and cause of the incident would be established through the investigation.
Seven Devotees Confirmed Dead
Police and district authorities confirmed that seven people had died in the incident. Several others suffered injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The Indian Express reported that around 10 people were injured, while other reports put the number of injured at more than 12 or 14 as officials continued assessing the situation. One injured person was reportedly referred to a higher medical centre, while others were said to be out of danger.
Four of the deceased were identified as Manmala Devi, 44, Rinku Devi, 50, Hemlata Devi, 55, and Lalita Devi, 45. Three were from Lakhisarai, while Rinku Devi was from neighbouring Munger district. Authorities continued the identification process and assessment of casualties as rescue and relief operations progressed.
Crowd Surge and Barricade Failure Under Investigation
Officials said the crowd had grown sharply during the morning. Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar reportedly reached the site around 3:30 a.m., while the number of devotees increased substantially around 6:30 a.m. According to officials, the collapse of barricading after people began falling contributed to the deadly crush.
Reports also suggested that the simultaneous arrival of trains at Ashok Dham halt may have contributed to the sudden increase in crowd density. However, authorities have stressed that the precise cause of the stampede-like situation will be determined after verification rather than relying on preliminary accounts or rumours.
Government Announces Compensation
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed grief over the deaths and directed the administration to ensure prompt medical treatment for the injured. The state government also announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹4 lakh to the family of each deceased devotee.
Police, district officials and emergency teams reached the site following the incident and began rescue and relief operations. The tragedy has once again raised concerns about crowd management, barricading, emergency access and safety arrangements at religious sites during major festival gatherings.
The investigation is expected to examine how the crowd was managed, why the barricading failed and what triggered the sudden panic. Authorities are also assessing the circumstances surrounding the reported fall of the electricity pole and the rumours that followed.
