Fresh tension erupted along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh inter-state border on Thursday, August 13, 2026, after a new clash was reported in Assam’s Dhemaji district. The development has renewed concerns over the long-running boundary dispute between the two northeastern states, prompting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to appeal for calm and restraint.
Fresh Clash Reported in Dhemaji
The latest confrontation reportedly took place along the sensitive border area, where tensions have increased following a series of incidents in recent days. According to reports, protesters from both sides became involved in a fresh confrontation on Thursday. Police from the neighbouring state reportedly fired warning shots into the air to disperse the gathering as the situation became tense.
The incident comes shortly after a firing episode along the same inter-state border left several people from Assam injured. Earlier reports put the number of injured at 18, with four people described as critically injured. The violence has been linked to tensions surrounding alleged land encroachment and boundary-related disagreements in the area.
Himanta Sarma Calls for Restraint
Amid the renewed tension, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged people on both sides to maintain peace. Sarma emphasised the close social and historical relationship between communities living across the state boundary, saying that an administrative boundary should not divide people who have shared relationships for generations.
Sarma also indicated that the majority of boundary-related differences between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have been addressed through dialogue and mutual understanding. According to his latest remarks, disputes remain in a limited number of villages, while several other issues have already been resolved through discussions between the two states.
Arunachal CM Pema Khandu Responds
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also appealed to residents of both states to maintain harmony and mutual respect following the firing incident. Khandu welcomed Sarma’s statement and described it as positive and reassuring, signalling an effort by both state governments to prevent the latest confrontation from escalating further.
The two governments are expected to continue coordination through their administrative and security officials. The immediate priority is to prevent further confrontation between local communities and restore normalcy in affected areas.
Long-Standing Boundary Dispute
Assam and Arunachal Pradesh share a long and complicated boundary history, with disagreements over several stretches of their inter-state border. Although successive governments have attempted to settle outstanding issues through negotiations, some localised disputes have continued to generate tension.
Recent incidents demonstrate how quickly disagreements involving land, communities and territorial claims can escalate in sensitive border areas. Officials on both sides have therefore stressed dialogue and administrative coordination rather than confrontation.
For residents of the affected areas, the immediate concern remains security and the restoration of normal movement. Authorities are expected to maintain a heightened presence while efforts continue to prevent further clashes.
The latest appeal from both chief ministers indicates a preference for resolving the situation through communication rather than allowing local tensions to develop into a wider inter-state confrontation. While the situation remains sensitive, the public statements from Sarma and Khandu suggest that both governments are focused on de-escalation, maintaining peace and protecting the longstanding ties between people living on either side of the border.
