MEERUT, August 11, 2026: In a striking display of communal harmony and humanity, a group of Kanwariyas reportedly formed a human chain on the Delhi-Dehradun Highway in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district to allow the funeral procession of a Muslim man to safely cross the busy route. The incident took place amid the massive movement of Shiva devotees participating in the annual Kanwar Yatra.
The funeral procession was carrying the body of 40-year-old Nizam, a resident of Sivaya village, who reportedly died of a heart attack. Since the village cemetery was located on the opposite side of the highway, the family needed to cross the busy Delhi-Dehradun route to reach the burial ground. At the time, the highway was crowded with thousands of Kanwariyas travelling as part of their pilgrimage.
Kanwariyas Pause Their Yatra
As the funeral procession approached the highway, the sheer number of pilgrims made crossing difficult. Local residents reportedly sought assistance from the police, following which Daurala police station in-charge Suman Kumar Singh reached the spot with police personnel.
When the Kanwariyas noticed the funeral procession, several devotees took the initiative to stop the movement of the pilgrimage temporarily. Instead of allowing the funeral party to negotiate its way through the large crowd, the devotees reportedly asked fellow pilgrims to pause and make space.
Within moments, members of the group formed a human chain, standing across the highway and holding back the moving crowd. Thousands of Kanwariyas reportedly remained stationary while the funeral procession crossed the road.
Funeral Given a Safe Passage
The funeral procession was allowed to pass respectfully toward the cemetery on the other side of the highway. The Kanwariyas continued to wait until the entire procession had crossed safely.
Only after the funeral procession had moved away from the highway did the pilgrims resume their journey. Reports said the devotees then continued towards their destination while chanting religious slogans associated with the Kanwar Yatra.
The gesture attracted attention because it occurred during one of the busiest periods of the annual pilgrimage, when large numbers of devotees travel along major roads across western Uttar Pradesh. The willingness of the pilgrims to temporarily stop their own procession enabled the bereaved family to complete an important final ritual without facing obstruction from the massive crowd.
A Moment of Communal Harmony
The incident has been widely described in local reports as an example of humanity, mutual respect and communal harmony. It also stands out because the two groups were following different religious traditions at the same time: the Kanwariyas were undertaking a pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Shiva, while the other group was carrying out a Muslim funeral ritual.
Rather than allowing the heavy movement of pilgrims to become an obstacle, devotees reportedly chose to make way for the funeral procession. The decision demonstrated how ordinary interactions between communities can sometimes create powerful moments of solidarity.
The incident comes during the final phase of the 2026 Kanwar Yatra, when roads across western Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring regions have witnessed exceptionally heavy movement of pilgrims. Authorities have deployed police personnel and traffic-management teams at several points to regulate the large crowds and maintain road safety.
For residents of Sivaya and others who witnessed the episode, the brief pause on the highway became more than a traffic-management measure. The Kanwariyas’ decision to form a human chain and allow Nizam’s funeral procession to pass peacefully offered a powerful reminder that respect for another person’s final journey can transcend religious differences.
The moment has since drawn attention online and in local media, with many viewing it as a positive example of coexistence during a period when religious processions and large public gatherings frequently place significant pressure on roads and communities.
