Air India has appointed veteran aviation executive Tewolde Gebremariam as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD), marking a significant leadership transition as the Tata Group-owned airline accelerates its ambitious transformation and global expansion strategy. The appointment brings one of the aviation industry’s most respected leaders to the helm of India’s flagship carrier at a crucial stage in its modernization journey.
Gebremariam is widely recognized for transforming Ethiopian Airlines into Africa’s largest and one of the world’s fastest-growing carriers during his tenure as Group CEO. With more than 37 years of experience in the aviation industry, he has earned a reputation for driving operational excellence, expanding international networks, and building profitable airline operations. His appointment is expected to strengthen Air India’s efforts to become a globally competitive full-service airline.
The leadership change comes as Air India continues implementing its multi-billion-dollar transformation program following its acquisition by the Tata Group. Over the past few years, the airline has placed record aircraft orders, upgraded its fleet, expanded international routes, invested in digital technologies, and enhanced passenger services. The company believes Gebremariam’s extensive global aviation experience will help accelerate these initiatives while improving operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
During his leadership at Ethiopian Airlines between 2011 and 2022, Gebremariam oversaw extraordinary growth. The airline expanded its fleet from just over 30 aircraft to around 130, significantly increased passenger traffic, strengthened cargo operations, and established Addis Ababa as one of Africa’s leading aviation hubs. He also guided the airline through major challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and global aviation disruptions, earning international recognition for his strategic leadership.
Industry experts believe his appointment could play a pivotal role in Air India’s long-term ambitions. The airline is currently focused on modernizing its operations, integrating newly acquired aircraft, improving on-time performance, expanding premium services, and strengthening its international presence. Under Tata Group ownership, Air India has already announced one of the world’s largest aircraft acquisition programs, with hundreds of new Airbus and Boeing aircraft scheduled for delivery over the coming years.
Aviation analysts note that Gebremariam’s expertise in fleet expansion, network planning, and airline profitability aligns well with Air India’s strategic objectives. His experience in managing rapid growth while maintaining operational standards is expected to support the airline’s efforts to compete more effectively with leading international carriers across Asia, Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
The appointment has also been welcomed by industry observers who see it as a strong signal of Air India’s commitment to global best practices. Having received numerous international awards for airline leadership, Gebremariam is regarded as one of the most accomplished executives in commercial aviation. His leadership philosophy, focused on innovation, employee development, and operational discipline, is expected to complement Air India’s ongoing transformation under the Tata Group.
As Air India enters its next phase of growth, expectations are high that the new CEO and Managing Director will build on the airline’s recent progress and position it among the world’s leading international carriers. With significant investments already underway in fleet renewal, technology, customer experience, and network expansion, the appointment of Tewolde Gebremariam represents another important milestone in Air India’s journey toward becoming a world-class global airline.
