Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand | July 30, 2026: The Kedarnath Yatra was temporarily suspended on Thursday after a major landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall blocked the trekking route near Gaurikund in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. Authorities halted the movement of pilgrims as large quantities of mud, rocks and boulders crashed onto the path, making the route unsafe.
The landslide occurred around 200 metres beyond the Gaurikund Gate, where debris completely covered the trekking trail leading to the Kedarnath shrine. Officials immediately stopped pilgrims at designated safe points to prevent any casualties while disaster response teams assessed the damage and began clearance operations.
Continuous rainfall across the Kedar Valley has increased the risk of landslides and rockfalls over the past several days. Besides the blocked trekking route, falling debris also disrupted traffic on the Kedarnath Highway near Munkatiya, affecting the movement of vehicles carrying pilgrims and essential supplies.
District administration officials, police personnel and disaster management teams were quickly deployed to the affected area. Excavators and road-clearing machinery were pressed into service to remove mud, stones and large boulders from the trekking path. Authorities said restoration work would continue until the route is declared completely safe for pilgrims.
Pilgrims already on the route were guided to secure locations, while those waiting at Gaurikund and Sonprayag were advised not to begin the trek until further notice. Officials urged devotees to cooperate with security personnel and avoid attempting to cross damaged sections of the route on their own, citing the possibility of additional landslides due to ongoing rain.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued heavy rainfall in parts of Uttarakhand, prompting authorities to remain on high alert. The state government is closely monitoring weather conditions and coordinating with disaster management agencies to ensure the safety of thousands of pilgrims visiting the Char Dham circuit during the monsoon season.
The Kedarnath pilgrimage is one of the most significant religious journeys in India and attracts lakhs of devotees every year. However, the Himalayan region is particularly vulnerable to landslides during the monsoon, making temporary suspensions of pilgrim movement a standard safety measure whenever weather conditions deteriorate.
Officials stated that the Yatra will resume only after engineers and disaster response teams certify that the trekking route is safe. Pilgrims have been advised to monitor official announcements from the Uttarakhand administration before planning their onward journey. Until weather conditions improve and the debris is cleared, movement towards the Kedarnath shrine will remain suspended as a precautionary measure.
