Social activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi on 18 July 2026. This happened because his health was getting worse on the day of his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. The doctors said that not eating for a time and not having enough water had made him very weak. The Delhi Police said they took him to the hospital because the doctors told them to and the Delhi High Court said they had to keep an eye on his health.

Sonam Wangchuk started his hunger strike on 28 June. He was asking for people to be held responsible for the 2026 examination paper leak controversy. He also wanted Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to quit his job. A lot of people started supporting him. Students, teachers, social activists and citizens from over the country were behind him. Thousands of people went to Jantar Mantar to show their support. People were also talking about it on media.

The Delhi Police said that doctors were checking Sonam Wangchuks health every day. When his health started getting worse because of not eating and not having water the doctors said he had to go to the hospital right away. On Saturday morning the police and medical staff took him from the protest site to Safdarjung Hospital. They said they did this so he could get the care he needed.

The hospital said that Sonam Wangchuk was stable but very weak. They said he would have to stay in the hospital until he got better. The doctors said that not eating and not having water had made him very weak. The hospital was taking care of him. Keeping a close eye on him.

When Sonam Wangchuk was taken to the hospital his supporters were very upset. Some people said that he was taken away against his will. The Delhi Police said that they did it peacefully and because the doctors told them to. There was a lot of commotion at Jantar Mantar. The police were able to calm things down. People were sharing videos and pictures of what happened and it started a big debate about how to handle peaceful protests.

Sonam Wangchuks wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo said that no one should give him treatment without asking his family and the doctors who were taking care of him. A lot of people heard what she said. It started a big discussion about Sonam Wangchuks health and how he was taken to the hospital.

Some political leaders were very upset about what happened. They said that the government was stopping a protest. The government said that they just wanted to make sure Sonam Wangchuk was safe and got the care he needed. His supporters said that they would keep protesting and they were planning protests.

What happened to Sonam Wangchuk made people talk about education reforms, public protests and the right to dissent again. As Sonam Wangchuk is still in the hospital people are waiting to see what will happen to him and what will happen to the protest movement. Sonam Wangchuk and his hunger strike are still a topic of discussion in the country. People are watching to see what Sonam Wangchuk will do next and how the government will respond to the situation. Sonam Wangchuks health is still a concern, for people and they are hoping that he will get better soon.
