PITHORAGARH, Uttarakhand, July 16: The Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand is a contender to become Indias first UNESCO Global Geopark. This is a deal because it means that Pithoragarh will get recognition for its amazing geological heritage. The proposed geopark will show people the rock formations, fossil sites and beautiful Himalayan landscapes in the area. It will also promote tourism and scientific research in a way that’s good for the environment.
Pithoragarh is in the Himalayas. It is known for its mountains, deep river valleys, glaciers and rare geological formations that are hundreds of millions of years old. Scientists think that the region is a place to study how the Himalayas were formed. This makes it one of the important geoheritage landscapes in India. The district is also home to fossils, mineral deposits and tectonic features that help us understand how the Earth was formed.
The proposal to make Pithoragarh a Global Geopark is part of a plan. The plan is to develop a Global Geopark Circuit in Pithoragarh and nearby districts. This will help to balance conservation with development. It will promote geotourism, scientific education and local businesses. It will also involve the community in decision-making. Officials think that if Pithoragarh becomes a UNESCO Global Geopark it will attract international tourists and help to preserve the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
UNESCO Global Geoparks are areas that are recognized internationally for their important geological features. These areas are protected through conservation, education and sustainable development. Unlike World Heritage Sites, geoparks focus on preserving features and involving local communities in promoting responsible tourism and environmental awareness. As of 2026 there are 241 geoparks in 51 countries. India does not have one yet.

The districts traditional Himalayan villages, old pilgrimage routes and indigenous knowledge systems make it a unique heritage landscape. The authorities are working to improve visitor infrastructure, interpretation centres and conservation measures to make Pithoragarhs application stronger.
The Geological Survey of India and UNESCO are working together to identify and prepare locations for Global Geopark status. They have conducted training workshops, stakeholder consultations and scientific assessments to build awareness about the programme and develop long-term management strategies. Officials think that India has a lot of potential for geoparks in the future and Pithoragarh is leading the way.
If Pithoragarh becomes a UNESCO Global Geopark it will be an achievement, for Indias geoheritage conservation efforts. It will put Pithoragarh alongside some of the worlds famous geological destinations.
