New Delhi, July 16: The Delhi High Court said something important on Thursday. The court was talking about the life of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. Sonam Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike for a time at Jantar Mantar. The court said that every human life is very precious.
The court asked the government to respond to a petition. This petition is about Sonam Wangchuks health. The petition wants doctors to be able to give Sonam Wangchuk food or medical treatment if his health gets worse.
This whole thing started because people were worried about Sonam Wangchuks health. He has been fasting for days. The petition said that if he keeps fasting he might get very sick. The court listened to what both sides had to say. Then they said they would talk about it later.
The judges said that the right to live is the important thing. This is according to Article 21 of the Constitution. The judges also said that the government cannot just stand by and watch when someones health is in danger.. At the same time the judges said that doctors should not force Sonam Wangchuk to take medical treatment without his permission.
The government told the court that Sonam Wangchuk is being monitored by doctors all the time. The doctors are keeping an eye on his health at the protest site. The government said that they are giving him the help he needs. They are also making sure that everything remains peaceful around the protest site.
Sonam Wangchuk is a known engineer and education reformer from Ladakh. He started the hunger strike because he wants the government to protect the environment in the region. He also wants the government to talk to the people of Ladakh about issues that affect them. Many people are supporting Sonam Wangchuk. These people include groups, students and political leaders.
The petition about force-feeding Sonam Wangchuk has started a debate. Some people think that saving his life is the important thing. Others think that forcing him to take treatment is wrong. They think it goes against his right to decide what happens to his body.
Outside the court many people were showing their support for Sonam Wangchuk. They want the government to talk to him and the other protesters. They do not want the situation to get worse. The doctors who are helping Sonam Wangchuk are worried about his health. They think it is very important to keep an eye on him.
The Delhi High Court did not make any decision about force-feeding Sonam Wangchuk. They just asked the government to give them their response, in writing. The court will talk about this later. They will think about what the doctors say, what the government says and what the law says before they make a decision.
