A big landslide happened at the Anakkompoyil–Meppadi tunnel road project site near Kalladi in Keralas Wayanad district on July 7. This triggered a rescue operation because workers and other people at the site were trapped under mud, rocks and construction debris. The landslide occurred near Meenakshi Bridge. It was raining very heavily which made it hard for people to rescue those trapped. The heavy rain also increased the risk of mud and rocks falling.
When the landslide happened people were trapped because the slope collapsed onto an area where tunnel-project workers were staying. Local people were the first to reach the site. They helped pull some people from the debris. Then special emergency teams. Expanded the rescue operation. The authorities sent rescue personnel, police, fire-and-rescue units and disaster-response teams to search the area.
As the rescue operation went on the number of people killed or injured changed. At one person died and several others were injured and taken to the hospital. Seven people were reported missing. The authorities were still trying to confirm the exact number of people who were at the site when the landslide happened.
The landslide happened at a site where a tunnel road is being built to improve connectivity between Malappuram and Wayanad districts. This project is important for Keralas road infrastructure because it will create a route through the hills. However the hills are very sensitive to rainfall, which makes construction work difficult.
Rescue teams are working hard to find people trapped under the mud and debris. They are also keeping an eye on the weather because it is still raining. The rain has made it hard to use machines. Has slowed down the rescue operation. The search teams are looking for air pockets under the rubble and medical teams are ready to treat anyone who is rescued.
The Kerala administration is directing the rescue and relief efforts. The main priority is to find the missing people make the area safe and ensure that the rescuers are not in danger of another landslide. This incident has raised concerns about safety protocols at infrastructure projects in areas that’re prone to landslides during the monsoon season.
The site of the landslide is close to Chooralmala, an area that was badly affected by the landslides in Wayanad in 2024. This new incident has brought back concerns about rainfall-linked disasters in the Western Ghats region. The authorities will release information as the rescue mission continues. For now the focus is on finding the missing people treating the injured and preventing casualties, at the Anakkompoyil–Meppadi tunnel road project site.
