A helicopter operated by Pawan Hans Limited crashed into the sea just moments before landing near Mayabunder in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Tuesday, triggering panic but ending in relief as all passengers were safely rescued.
According to preliminary reports, the helicopter was approaching its designated helipad near Mayabunder when it reportedly lost stability and went down into the shallow waters close to the shoreline. The incident occurred during routine inter-island operations, which are frequently conducted to connect remote parts of the Andaman archipelago.
Officials said the aircraft was carrying several passengers, including local residents and crew members. Fortunately, the helicopter crashed into relatively shallow waters, which played a crucial role in preventing a major tragedy. Local fishermen and emergency responders rushed to the scene within minutes of the crash.
Rescue teams from the district administration, along with personnel from the Indian Coast Guard and local police, immediately launched a coordinated rescue operation. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as villagers gathered along the coastline, while rescue boats moved swiftly toward the partially submerged aircraft.
“All passengers were evacuated safely and taken to a nearby health facility for medical examination. No fatalities have been reported,” a senior official confirmed. Some individuals sustained minor injuries and shock but are reported to be stable.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to initiate a detailed investigation into the cause of the crash. Early indications suggest possible technical malfunction or challenging weather conditions, though officials have stated that the exact cause will only be determined after a formal probe.
Helicopter services in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are considered a lifeline for residents, particularly in remote and difficult-to-access areas. With limited road connectivity and vast stretches of sea separating the islands, air connectivity remains crucial for medical emergencies, administrative travel, and civilian transport.
Pawan Hans, a government-owned helicopter service provider, has been operating in the region for decades. The company plays a key role in supporting offshore operations, tourism, and inter-island connectivity across India.
Local authorities have temporarily suspended helicopter operations in the region as a precautionary measure. Technical teams are expected to assess operational safety standards and inspect similar aircraft before services resume.
Residents of Mayabunder expressed gratitude toward rescue teams for their swift response. “It could have been a disaster, but the quick action by locals and authorities saved many lives,” said a local fisherman who participated in the rescue.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with aviation operations in island territories, where unpredictable weather patterns and limited infrastructure pose operational challenges.
As investigators begin examining flight data, maintenance logs, and pilot communication records, aviation authorities have assured the public that all necessary safety protocols will be reviewed thoroughly.
Further updates are expected once officials release a preliminary investigation report
