Senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday strongly condemned the arrest of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) chief following a shirtless protest staged during a high-profile AI Summit, accusing the government of exhibiting “dictatorial tendencies” and suppressing dissent.
The controversy erupted after the IYC leader reportedly removed his shirt during the summit venue protest, alleging that the government was prioritising elite corporate interests over pressing youth issues such as unemployment and rising living costs. The dramatic protest led to his detention by police on charges related to public disturbance and breach of security protocol.
Reacting sharply, Kharge said the arrest reflected an “intolerance toward democratic expression.” In a statement, he asserted that peaceful protests are a fundamental right in a democracy and accused the ruling dispensation of attempting to silence opposition voices through intimidation.
“Raising questions about unemployment and inequality is not a crime. Arresting youth leaders for symbolic protests shows how insecure this government has become,” Kharge said.
Rahul Gandhi echoed similar sentiments, stating that the arrest exposed what he termed as the government’s “double standards on free speech.” He argued that while grand discussions on artificial intelligence and technological progress were being showcased at the summit, genuine concerns of young Indians were being ignored.
“The youth of India deserve answers, not arrests,” Gandhi said, adding that dissent is the cornerstone of democracy and cannot be throttled by police action.
According to police sources, security at the AI Summit was heightened due to the presence of senior ministers, global tech executives, and foreign delegates. Authorities maintained that the protester’s actions violated event security norms and created disruption inside a restricted area.
Officials stated that while the protest was political in nature, it was carried out in a sensitive zone that required strict access control. “Security protocols were breached. Necessary legal action was taken as per procedure,” a senior police officer said.
The incident has sparked a wider political debate, with several opposition leaders and civil society groups questioning whether the response was proportionate. Supporters of the IYC chief described the protest as symbolic, aimed at drawing attention to unemployment and youth distress.
Meanwhile, the ruling party leaders defended the police action, stating that no individual is above the law and that international events of strategic importance cannot be disrupted under the guise of protest.
Political analysts suggest that the episode may further intensify tensions between the government and the opposition, especially with national elections approaching. The optics of arresting a youth leader during a globally publicised technology summit have added a fresh layer to the ongoing narrative battle between the two sides.
As of the latest updates, the IYC chief remains in custody, with party leaders planning demonstrations demanding his immediate release. Legal proceedings are expected to determine the next course of action.
The incident underscores the continuing friction over free speech, protest rights, and political dissent in India’s evolving democratic landscape.
