Gold and Silver Prices Plunge Today
Gold and silver prices took a sharp hit on Friday after a wave of profit-booking hit the market. COMEX gold prices fell over 11% to $4,763.10 per ounce, while silver also dropped significantly.
To put it in perspective, gold is now about 15% below its all-time high of $5,625.16 per ounce, and silver has slumped more than 31% below its record of $121.755 per ounce.
In India, MCX gold for April futures closed at ₹1,50,849 per 10 grams, down ₹1,496 or 0.98% from the previous day. This is 16.55% below the all-time high of ₹1,80,779 per 10 grams. MCX silver for March futures ended at ₹2,91,922 per kg, down 30.50% from its record high of ₹4,20,048 per kg.
Why Are Gold and Silver Falling?
Margin Hikes Spark Panic
Commodity expert Anuj Gupta explains that the recent margin hike on copper at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) triggered panic in gold and silver markets.
“Gold and silver were already overbought, and the talk of a CME margin hike created a selling frenzy,” Gupta said. “The US dollar is also strengthening after President Trump announced his nominee for the next Federal Reserve Chairman, which further pressured metals.”
Hawkish US Fed Concerns
Nikunj Saraf, CEO of Choice Wealth, noted that fears of a more hawkish US Fed have strengthened the dollar and pressured gold and silver. “A tighter US policy could hurt overbought metals,” he added.
The sell-off is also affecting gold and silver ETFs, with many investors reacting to global market changes.
Fading Uncertainty Reduces Safe-Haven Demand
Amit Goel, Chief Global Strategist at Pace 360, said that safe-haven demand for gold and silver is easing. “With the new Fed chief announced, uncertainty around US interest rates has decreased. The dollar has strengthened, which weighs on gold and silver prices,” he explained.
He also mentioned that easing US-Iran tensions contributed to a weaker demand for safe-haven assets last week.
Union Budget 2026 Could Add Pressure
Gupta also pointed to the upcoming Union Budget 2026 as a factor for potential further declines. “There is speculation that the government may cut import duties on gold and silver to boost demand in the jewellery market. Such a move could push prices lower,” he said.
Industry groups in the gems and jewellery sector have been lobbying for lower import duties, and any government announcement could trigger more volatility in precious metals.

Analysts suggest monitoring certain price ranges for gold and silver:
- COMEX Gold: $4,550 to $4,900 per ounce
- MCX Gold: ₹1,35,000 to ₹1,80,000 per 10 grams
- COMEX Silver: $70 to $95 per ounce
- MCX Silver: ₹2,50,000 to ₹3,50,000 per kg
For high-risk traders, smaller ranges may be used for short-term strategies:

These levels can help investors gauge potential price swings and trading opportunities.
What Investors Should Know
- Margin Hikes Affect Prices: Changes in CME margins can trigger sharp market reactions.
- Government Policies Matter: Budget announcements, especially on import duties, can create sudden volatility.
- Global Factors Influence Metals: US Fed policy, dollar strength, and geopolitical developments all play a role.
- Monitor Risk Carefully: Sudden drops can impact ETFs and trading portfolios; caution is advised.
Experts recommend that investors stay informed, seek guidance from certified financial advisors, and avoid panic selling in volatile markets.
Bottom Line
Gold and silver prices are under pressure due to a mix of domestic and global factors. Margin hikes, a strengthening US dollar, a hawkish Fed outlook, and expectations from the upcoming Union Budget 2026 have all contributed to the sharp declines.
While these metals remain important for long-term investors, the recent volatility highlights the need for caution and careful market monitoring.
