A major road accident took place early this morning on the Yamuna Expressway as a huge pileup involving several vehicles occurred due to extremely dense fog, resulting in loss of lives and serious injuries. The accident occurred near the Mathura part of the high-speed highway, and this incident once again draws attention to the dangerous environment that prevails due to dense fog during winters in North India.
Preliminary reports indicate that several automobiles, buses, and heavy trucks were caught up in the crash, with the vehicles moving at a high rate of speed before the drivers lost all visibility in the fog, which had cleared the highway of any visibility, enabling a chain-reaction crash, witnesses say, in a split second, before any of the drivers could avoid an accident.
The concerned authorities were immediately informed about the accident, and police, firefighting, and medical teams rushed to the site. It was very difficult for the rescuers to save people due to dense fog and damage caused by the collision. In some of these vehicles, people were stuck inside, and rescuers were forced to break through iron to save them. The injured were administered initial treatment and sent to nearby hospitals in Mathura and Agra, and seriously injured ones were sent to specialized hospitals.
Although officials have confirmed a number of fatalities in the accident, others are reportedly in a critical condition. Indeed, officials are yet to confirm the number of victims since some of them lost their lives due to their condition while receiving medical attention. In this case, fire officials have also reported a few cars on fire due to the accident.
The Yamuna Expressway between Greater Noida and Agra is famous as the smoothest and fastest driveable expressway in India, with many people having taken this drive. However, many fatalities have occurred on this expressway, especially during the winter months when the weather is foggy. Many drivers continue to ignore speed restrictions as a result of the advisory effect.
The police cited that the distance of visibility at the time of the accident was allegedly less than 20 meters. “The fog was very thick. A car driver could not even see the tail lights of vehicles in front of him. This seems like a case where vehicles were overspeeding because of a sudden loss of visibility,” a traffic police official said. The traffic flow on this stretch has been temporarily regulated.
In light of the occurrence, warnings were issued for motorists to steer clear of travel during the early morning and late evening hours when the fog is most detrimental. Motorists are recommended to turn on their fog lamps, keep a safe following distance from the vehicle before them, and avoid braking abruptly. The variable message signboards placed along the expressway are set on to alert commuters of the reduced visibility.
This incident has reignited calls for better road safety on expressways built for high speeds. Experts on road safety have over the years recommended strict enforcement of the speed rule during inclement weather, the use of automation in fog detection, and the deployment of warning lights during periods of low visibility. Others have recommended the closure of expressways during extreme fog.
“Families of the dead reacted to the tragedy in emotions that range from grief to outrage. “Everyone has lost their loved ones,” said one family member of the dead in Mathura District Civil Hospital. “People die every year because of the thick fog on this road. How many will die before stringent measures are taken?” “
The district authorities have offered compensation to the families of the dead and have promised a full-scale inquiry into the matter. The authorities said that the CCTV cameras and witness accounts will be investigated in order to understand the manner in which the rules were flouted. With the winter fog laying thick over large areas of North India, the need for being vigilant and taking proper precautions to avoid a disaster like yesterday’s has once again been brought to the fore.
