In a tragic incident, a road accident involving a passenger bus has resulted in the death of at least nine people, with more than 20 others injured, when the vehicle fell into a deep gorge in the Alluri Sitarama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday morning. This is an incident that has brought to light once again the dangers that exist on hilly routes.
The Incident
As per reports, the private bus was traveling from the port city of Visakhapatnam to Paderu with a passenger strength of over 30 people when it lost control on a sharp curve on a ghat road in the Galikonda area because of dense fog and mist, which reduced visibility to zero. The bus swerved from the narrow path on which it was moving, plunging a total of 30 feet into a ravine as it flipped over several times.
The people from the local area, who had been alarmed by the loud crash, rushed to the scene to notify the authorities. The terrain made rescue work difficult.
Casualties & Injuries
It was confirmed that nine people who were on board the bus are dead, having been killed either on impact or succumbed to injuries on being rushed to nearby hospitals. There are reports that a number of the injured are serious, with head wounds, fractures, as well as internal bleeding. The injured have been rushed to government hospitals in Paderu and Ananthagiri, with serious cases being referred to Visakhapatnam hospitals for further treatment.
The District Collector, along with senior police, visited hospitals to assess the arrangements made for treatment. Expert medical teams, including orthopedicians, were mobilized to cope with the rush of patients.
The Rescue Operation
The rescue mission involved representatives from the police, fire department, and volunteers from the local communities. The topography, which has a steep slope with a high degree of forest cover, made the use of a crane difficult, making it necessary for the rescue team to physically pull the passengers who were stranded inside the crashed bus.
Ropes and stretchers were used by the authorities to evacuate the survivors, with ambulances parked by to take the injured to hospital. The bus was later removed from the scene after a couple of hours when all the injured had been rescued.
Possible Causes
Although the reasons behind the accident are still being investigated, it is thought that overspeeding, road conditions, and reduced visibility owing to fog might have led to the accident. In addition, it is also a possibility that the driver might have been tired, as the trip started late at night.
The Regional Transport Authority has been directed to examine the bus to see whether there has been any mechanical failure or disregard of safety standards. The driver has survived the accident, as he is now undergoing treatment, whose testimony would be taken later when his health condition improves.
Government Response
Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, expressed his condolences over the unfortunate incident. In addition, he also offered compensation to the relatives of the dead people, as well as providing the best available treatment to the injured ones.
The state government has also called for an inquiry into the accident. It has directed the transport department to check safety arrangements on ghat roads, especially in the early morning and night hours.
The Ever-Looming Threat
This is a disturbing phenomenon that has been adding up to the toll of fatal accidents on hilly roads in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The reasons for such accidents include narrow roads, tight curves, incomplete guard rails, along with unstable climatic conditions, which are a threat to all commuters on these routes. Road safety activists have been demanding improved infrastructure, warning systems, and reduced speeds on such routes.
Conclusion
The accident that occurred in the Alluri Sitarama Raju district is a reminder of the need to ensure that safety on the roads is given paramount importance. Families are left to mourn the death of their loved ones, but the government is under renewed pressure to ensure that such avoidable incidents are averted in the future. The next few days are going to be very significant.
