IIT Bombay’s iconic annual Techfest is going to reach new heights this year as the institution is all set to welcome four astronauts, including Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla, reportedly India’s first astronaut to visit the International Space Station. The 2025 edition of the festival, scheduled for later this month, is already generating excitement across India’s student and tech community; the presence of the astronauts is expected to be one of its biggest highlights.
For a decade, Techfest has been known for its heady mix of innovation, robotics, and technology showcases with high-profile speaker sessions, drawing eyeballs from across the globe. But this year’s lineup is a first of sorts for the institute – bringing multiple Gaganyaan astronauts together for a shared interaction with students, something that has never happened in India.
A landmark moment for students
Accompanying Shubhanshu Shukla, who created history earlier by completing the short-duration mission to ISS, will be three other astronauts from the Gaganyaan program of India. This represents a unique opportunity for students, researchers, and space enthusiasts to learn directly from individuals who have undergone rigorous astronautical training, simulations, and real-time mission experiences.
Organizers at Techfest added that the astronauts would participate in keynote sessions, panel discussions, and interactive Q&A sessions. Further, they would also be involved in workshops related to space technology, human-spaceflight physiology, mission design, and India’s growing capabilities in the global space sector.
One festival coordinator estimated that thousands will attend the sessions with astronauts on campus and online. “This is one of the rarest opportunities for students to meet astronauts—not just through screens, but live, in an academic space built for innovation,” he said.
Celebrating India’s Growing Space Ambition
The timing of the astronauts’ visit is apt. After the success of Chandrayaan-3, Aditya-L1, and ISRO’s expansion in human spaceflight mission capabilities, India has gained momentum in its global standing within the space sector. The visit by four astronauts to a campus tech festival is symbolic, a reflection of the rising confidence of the nation in space science and its appeal among its youth.
The spotlight, therefore, remains especially on Shubhanshu Shukla. His feats as the first Indian astronaut to board the International Space Station instilled a sense of pride and regenerated interest in STEM careers among millions of students throughout the nation.
During Techfest, Shukla is expected to share insights into his ISS mission: challenges of microgravity, daily astronaut routines, scientific experiments conducted on board, and the technological systems that support human life in space. His perspective is expected to offer rare real-world context to students of aerospace engineering, robotics, physics, and computer science.
Workshops, Simulations, and Space-Technology Exhibits
Besides the keynote sessions, Techfest will feature various workshops and exhibitions based on space exploration. These are:
Microgravity experiment simulations
Model rocket-building competitions
Astronomy and astrophysics masterclasses
Space robotics demonstrations
Augmented-reality walkthroughs of spacecraft interiors
Organizers have designed these activities in consultation with ISRO, private space-tech startups, and aerospace researchers. The concept is to bring immersive first-hand knowledge to students regarding real-world space mission processes, from design to deployment.
As an official from IIT Bombay explained, the events are organized with the belief that such sessions will inspire curiosity in young minds and guide them toward careers related to space systems, astronautical engineering, and scientific research.
Techfest: The Wider Global Appeal
Techfest has always managed to draw the globe’s influencers, innovators, and scientific leaders onto the IIT campus. From Nobel laureates to the founders of technology, the platform has hosted some of the world’s most influential voices. The addition of astronauts elevates the 2025 edition even further, setting it down as one of Asia’s leading science and technology festivals.
International universities, research labs, and tech companies will also attend this year’s event, further enhancing the festival’s networking and collaboration opportunities.
A Fillip to India’s Space-Based Youth Movement
The presence of astronauts is likely to energize India’s fast-growing community of space enthusiasts and STEM learners. For the last few years, there has been huge growth in popularity in space-tech startups, innovation clubs for students, and aerospace competitions. Events such as Techfest play an important role in shaping this momentum, since these are accessible platforms for learning and exploration, which ultimately lead to innovation.
Parents and teachers have also welcomed the move, saying that real-life interactions with the astronauts are far more effective than lessons in the classroom. Many believe this could inspire a new generation of Indian scientists, engineers, and mission specialists:
A Festival Set to Inspire With IIT Bombay gearing up for Techfest 2025, excitement has reached an all-time high. The arrival of Shubhanshu Shukla and other Gaganyaan astronauts has already ensured that this year’s festival will not only showcase state-of-the-art technology but also celebrate India’s fast-expanding vision in space exploration. With thousands of students aspiring to work at ISRO, NASA, or private space-tech ventures, Techfest 2025 is sure to be an experience that may spark new aspirations, projects, and innovations for the years to come.
