S&P Global Ratings Projects India’s Growth at 6.5% in FY26, Signals Strong Consumption-Led Recovery

In a major endorsement of India’s economic resilience, S&P Global Ratings has forecast the country to grow at 6.5% in FY26, largely driven by consumption recovery, tax relief measures, and supportive monetary conditions. The rating agency also expects GDP growth to accelerate slightly to 6.7% in FY27, underpinning the view that India will remain one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world despite global headwinds.
The latest projection comes at a time when both advanced and emerging economies are navigating uncertainties, varying from geopolitical conflicts to commodity price volatility. In this scenario, S&P’s outlook has positioned India as a bright spot in the global growth landscape. According to the rating agency, recent tax cuts, especially those targeted at consumers, promise to perk up household demand and fire an all-rounded economic turnaround. This stimulus to consumption, along with consistently strong government capex through its infrastructure push, sets the stage for steady growth over the medium term.

S&P’s analysis has shown that private consumption, accounting for nearly 60% of India’s GDP, has exhibited signs of a firm recovery. After a post-pandemic slowdown caused by inflationary pressures, rural distress, and supply-chain disruptions, demand is stabilizing in both urban and semi-urban areas. The government’s recent focus on putting more disposable income into the hands of consumers-from tax rationalization to income-support schemes-is expected to be crucial for sustaining momentum in FY26.

Another major reason for this optimistic GDP forecast is the expectation of monetary easing. With inflation gradually moving toward the target band of the Reserve Bank of India, S&P expects space for interest rate cuts. Lower borrowing costs would incentivize consumers and also provide the much-needed boost for higher private-sector investment in manufacturing, technology, and infrastructure. This is in tune with the bigger economic strategy of the government to ramp up investment-led growth.

India’s macroeconomic fundamentals also continue to improve. S&P forecasts that India’s fiscal deficit will narrow gradually as revenue collections improve and growth stabilizes. The rating agency has also noted the strong digital infrastructure of the country, which is increasingly formalizing its economy and integrating technology into various sectors, leading to increased productivity and competitiveness. Besides, the consistent effort by the government on initiatives like Make in India, PLI schemes, and Atmanirbhar Bharat provides structural depth to the growth prospects by encouraging domestic manufacturing and reducing dependency on imports.

External risks still prevail, though. High global oil prices, capital flow volatility, and geopolitical tensions may weigh on India’s external balance. S&P cautions that while India’s foreign exchange reserves remain strong, any prolonged disruption in global commodity markets or trade routes could test economic stability. In addition, uneven monsoons and climate-related disruptions pose challenges to agricultural output, which directly influences rural consumption patterns.

The growth story of India, despite these risks, fundamentally appears intact. The continuous expansion in financial services, retail, digital economy, and clean energy is constantly creating jobs and attracting investments. Indian startups and mid-sized enterprises are likely to play an increasingly bigger role in innovation-driven growth in FY26 and beyond.

S&P’s estimate also puts India in a relatively favorable position against its global peers. The major economies of Europe, Japan, and even parts of Southeast Asia are seen to record slower growth due to weak demand and tightening financial conditions. In contrast, India’s mix of fiscal support, demographic advantage, digital adoption, and continuity of policy provides a relatively stable environment for investors.

Going into FY26, the focus would once again be on a judicious balance between growth and stability. Policymakers are expected to continue to balance inflation risks and ensure that the consumption and investment engines are running on full throttle. For businesses and investors, the S&P forecast underlined the long-term potential of the Indian market and further reinforced confidence in its ability to sustain growth despite uncertainties.
The improving macro indicators, increasing global interest in India as a destination for investments, coupled with sustained government reforms, make the projected 6.5% growth rate reflective not just of a rebound but a new cycle of economic growth that could define India’s trajectory in this decade.
