In a dramatic twist, the investigation in the high-profile acid attack case in north-west Delhi took an unusual turn after the wife of the prime accused lodged a serious complaint against the survivor’s father, accusing him of rape and extortion. The new complaint has left the case in shambles, with doubts being raised over motive, credibility and the dynamics involved in crimes of violence and revenge.
According to reports, the acid attack occurred earlier this month in Delhi’s Mongolpuri area, when a 20-year-old woman was attacked with acid while on her way to work. The assault left her with severe facial and upper-body burns, prompting widespread outrage and renewed debate over women’s safety in the national capital. Police soon apprehended the prime suspect — a man familiar to the victim — and two accomplices who had supposedly assisted him in acquiring the acid and conducting the attack.
The New Allegation
But, in a dramatic twist, the wife of the accused has since then stepped forward alleging that the survivor’s father had raped her a few months ago. She accused him of raping her in her statement, and also blackmailing her with incriminating videos, threatening to circulate them on the internet if she didn’t keep in touch. She also accused her husband (acid attack accused) of finding out about this recently and confronting the survivor’s family — and things escalating so much that they could have contributed to the brutal attack.
The wife’s statement has been recorded at the police station within Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). A rape and blackmail case against the survivor’s father is claimed to have been registered, and police affirm that an independent investigation has been launched to confirm the allegations.
Police Investigation Deepens
Delhi Police officials confirmed that both the incidents — the acid attack and the rape charge — will be pursued independently. “We are checking the validity of the fresh allegations. Forensic and digital evidence will be important in establishing the truth,” said a senior officer in a press conference.
Investigating officers are also going through the CCTV footage, phone records, and chat records to see what transpired between the two families, sources said. The wife of the accused is also likely to be subjected to a medical check-up in connection with the rape case. Police officials said the initial acid attack case still stands as it has eyewitnesses’ statements and CCTV footage that indicates the accused fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.
Public Perception and Legal Complication
The news has created a split in public opinion. While some view the wife’s complaint as a potential attempt to deflect fault or dilute the acid attack case, others perceive her claims as deserving serious attention and a fair hearing.
Women’s rights groups have demanded neutral probes into both incidents. “Every case should be dealt with on its own merits. If the woman has been raped, she needs justice. And the acid attack survivor also cannot be denied justice because of counter-claims,” said women’s rights activist Kavita Krishnan.
Legal practitioners point out that parallel cases of this sort are very challenging. “When two families charge each other with serious offenses, the police have to walk on eggshells to make sure that neither group can influence the process. The integrity of evidence and witness statements becomes really important,” said senior advocate Meenakshi Arora.
Acid Attacks and the Broader Problem
The incident has revived fears of acid attacks in India, which continue to be a sinister form of gender violence despite stringent laws. The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013, criminalized acid attacks as a specific, non-bailable offense, with up to life imprisonment as punishment. The Supreme Court has also instructed governments at the state level to regulate sales of acid and offer free treatment and compensation to victims.
But activists claim that enforcement is still uneven. India reported over 150 acid attacks in 2024, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), although experts say the actual figure is higher due to underreporting. Survivors often suffer from lifetime physical and psychological injury, with delayed trials and stigma.
The Way Forward
Here in this specific instance, officials have assured a proper probe, but the contradictory versions are expected to make proceedings difficult. Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora has ordered both cases to be kept under surveillance by senior officers so that there is no interference and to maintain transparency.
In the meantime, the acid attack victim is still undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital’s burns ward, where her doctors have stated that she remains stable but will need several reconstructive surgeries. Her family has been upset about the fresh allegations, describing them as “a deliberate distraction to weaken the case.”
As the probe unfolds, the case is a stark reminder of the ubiquity of gender violence and the social undercurrents of revenge and shame that have often characterized such crimes. Whether the wife’s charges are shown to be true or revealed to be in the nature of a retaliatory move, the occurrence highlights the necessity for quicker delivery of justice, enhanced protection for women, and greater insight into how personal squabbles can turn into tragedies.
