Banks were closed in Indian states on Wednesday, May 27 because of Bakrid, which is also known as Eid-ul-Adha or Id-ul-Zuha. This is one of the important festivals in Islam.. The thing is, in India the holidays for banks are decided by each state so some places had normal bank hours and some did not.
Bakrid is a festival that remembers when Prophet Ibrahim was willing to give up his son to show he would do what God wanted. People celebrate this festival by praying, giving to charity and getting together with their communities. The days when people get a holiday for this festival can be different depending on when the moon’s seen and what the local government decides.
The Reserve Bank of India has rules about when banks can be closed and on May 27 some states did not have any bank services like going to the counter clearing checks or doing things that need to be done at the bank. People who wanted to go to the bank were told to check if their local bank was going to be open before they went.
Though some banks were closed people could still use digital banking all over the country. This means they could use the internet to do their banking send money to others take out cash from the machine use their mobile banking app and do important bank things without any problems.
There was some confusion about when the holiday was because the date of Bakrid was not the same due to the moon sighting. Some state governments changed the holiday dates after they got the information from religious leaders. Some places were going to be closed on May 27. Then they changed it to May 28.
Delhi and Telangana were two places where the government changed the holiday dates because of the festival. West Bengal also changed its holiday date to May 28 after they thought about it again.
Banking experts are telling people to get any bank work done before the festival holidays especially when the holidays fall on the same days as the weekends and the banks are closed for a longer time. This is very important for things like depositing checks giving documents to the bank and other things that need to be done in person.
The way India decides its bank holidays is different from countries because each state can decide its own holidays based on the festivals that are important to the people who live there. Even though digital banking is very common now the holiday schedule is still very important for people who like to do their banking in person. Bakrid is a festival and Bakrid is a time when many people want to spend with their families so the holiday is very important for them. Bakrid and Eid-ul-Adha are the thing and Eid-ul-Adha is a time for people to come together and Eid-ul-Adha is a very special day, for many Indians.
