US and India move closer with defence and trade push

The relationship between the United States and India appears to be entering a new phase, with both countries strengthening cooperation in defence, trade and energy. A senior US official recently confirmed that Washington is preparing to expand defence sales to India, signalling deeper strategic ties between the two democracies.

At the same time, both nations are finalising an interim trade framework that could reshape economic cooperation, reduce tariffs and significantly boost bilateral trade in the coming years.

This evolving partnership is not just about military equipment or trade numbers. It reflects shifting global alliances, economic priorities and shared geopolitical interests.

Why defence cooperation is growing

Plans for new weapons purchases

S Paul Kapur, assistant secretary at the US Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, stated that several defence deals are currently being discussed. According to him, these potential purchases are meant to help India strengthen its security capabilities.

The idea is straightforward: India faces complex regional security challenges, and stronger defence cooperation with the US helps both countries align strategically. For India, access to advanced American technology can modernise its armed forces. For the US, it opens a major defence market while strengthening a key partner in Asia.

Kapur emphasised that defence cooperation has continued to move forward even during trade disagreements between the two countries.

Strategic interests behind the partnership

There are broader reasons behind this growing defence cooperation:

  • Both countries share concerns about stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • The US sees India as a crucial strategic partner in Asia.
  • India aims to diversify its defence suppliers and reduce dependence on any single country.

These factors make defence ties a natural area for expansion.

Trade deal progress after months of negotiations

Tariff reductions and economic benefits

After nearly a year of discussions, India and the United States are close to finalising an interim trade deal. One key outcome is a reduction in reciprocal tariffs, reportedly dropping from 25 percent to around 18 percent.

Lower tariffs could mean:

  • Increased trade flows between the two countries
  • Cheaper imports for businesses and consumers
  • More stable economic relations

Officials from both sides describe the deal as mutually beneficial, suggesting it could support economic growth in both countries.

Defence ties continued despite trade tensions

Interestingly, defence cooperation did not slow down even when trade talks became complicated. According to US officials, the momentum remained steady and is expected to grow even faster now that trade concerns are being resolved.

This suggests that defence and security cooperation have become a long-term priority rather than a short-term political move.

India’s proposed $500 billion purchase commitment

What India plans to buy

A major highlight of the evolving trade partnership is India’s intention to purchase about $500 billion worth of American goods over the next five years. These purchases are expected to span multiple sectors, including:

  • Energy products such as oil and gas
  • Aircraft and aviation components
  • Precious metals
  • Advanced technology products like GPUs for artificial intelligence and data centres
  • Cooking coal and other industrial resources

While many of these items are already imported from the US, the scale of the proposed commitment signals a significant expansion.

Economic impact on both sides

Commerce officials note that current imports between the two countries are already substantial and growing steadily. Demand is expected to rise even further, potentially reaching much higher trade volumes in the future.

For India, this helps secure energy supplies, technology access and industrial inputs. For the US, it supports exports, job creation and economic growth.

Many analysts describe the arrangement as a classic win-win scenario, provided both sides follow through on commitments.

Changes in oil trade dynamics

Removal of penalty tariffs

Another major development is the removal of a 25 percent penalty tariff previously imposed by the United States on India. That tariff had been linked to India’s purchases of Russian crude oil.

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order eliminating the penalty, signalling a reset in energy trade relations.

India’s shifting energy strategy

According to the executive order, India is expected to gradually reduce reliance on Russian oil and diversify supplies, potentially increasing imports from the United States and possibly Venezuela.

Energy security remains a top priority for India, given its rapidly growing economy and rising energy needs. Diversification helps reduce risk while strengthening ties with major energy suppliers.

What this means geopolitically

A stronger strategic alignment

The deepening US-India partnership reflects broader geopolitical trends:

  • Greater cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region
  • Shared concerns about regional stability
  • Increasing economic interdependence

This alignment does not necessarily replace India’s relationships with other countries but signals a stronger tilt toward collaboration with Washington.

Economic diplomacy taking centre stage

Trade, defence and energy cooperation are increasingly interconnected. Economic diplomacy now plays a central role in shaping foreign relations.

For both India and the United States, the benefits include:

  • Expanded markets and investment opportunities
  • Enhanced technological collaboration
  • Stronger political and strategic ties

Potential challenges ahead

While the outlook appears positive, several challenges could affect the partnership:

  • Domestic political changes in either country
  • Trade imbalances or economic slowdowns
  • Geopolitical tensions with other global powers

Managing these issues will require continued dialogue and flexibility from both sides.

The bigger picture for the future

The expanding defence sales and trade cooperation between India and the United States represent more than individual deals. They signal a broader transformation in how the two countries interact economically, politically and strategically.

If current trends continue, the partnership could become one of the defining bilateral relationships of the coming decades.

For India, it offers access to advanced technology, stronger defence capabilities and expanded economic opportunities. For the United States, it strengthens ties with one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies and a key geopolitical partner.

Ultimately, the success of this relationship will depend on sustained trust, consistent policy decisions and the ability to balance national interests with shared goals.
