From 2 February 2026 India has officially increased the duty- baggage allowance for international passengers to ₹75,000. This is a help for people traveling back to India. The government made this change to help people because travel costs are going everywhere. Indias customs and baggage rules have not changed much in a time so this is a pretty big deal. The idea is to make Indias rules like what other countries are doing since people are spending more money when they travel. Indias duty-free baggage allowance is now ₹75,000 which’s a big increase. This will make it easier for international passengers to bring things back to India without having to pay money. Indias customs and baggage regulations are important for passengers and this change, to the duty-free baggage allowance will affect a lot of people traveling to India.

The new rules for residents and people visiting from other countries who come by plane say that they can bring things they own up to a value of ₹75,000 without having to pay extra money to customs. Before this the limit was lower. That caused a lot of problems and delays at airports because people had more stuff than they were allowed to bring. Now, with the limit of ₹75,000 it should be easier for Indian residents and foreign travelers to get through customs at the airport and there will be less congestion when they arrive from other countries.

The government has made some changes to the rules about what people can bring into the country. These changes are part of the Baggage Rules 2026. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs made these rules. The government is doing this because they know that things cost more now. People are also traveling more, to countries and back home again so they are bringing back more things. This is happening because of the pandemic. Now that it is over people are traveling a lot more. The Baggage Rules 2026 are trying to deal with these issues.

The new rules say that passengers can bring things like electronics, clothing, watches, footwear, personal accessories and gifts long as they are worth ₹75,000 or less. If the things you bring are worth than ₹75,000 you will have to pay customs duty. The amount of duty you pay will depend on the rates.

However some things are not allowed, no matter what they are worth. These include firearms, narcotics and some kinds of commercial goods. The rules, for these things are very strict.

People who know a lot about this stuff think that the new rules about what you can bring into the country will really help people who fly a lot like people who work in countries, students and Non-Resident Indians. These people often bring things for their families. The people in charge of the airports also like this change because it might stop arguments between travelers and the people who check what you are bringing into the country. This could make it nicer for people when they get to airports, like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

The new policy is going to help duty- shopping and popular shopping places around the world. People traveling will feel better about buying things when they are abroad because they will not have to worry about paying extra taxes when they get back home. Duty-free retail and global shopping destinations will really benefit from this. At the time customs people are saying that they will still do random checks and ask people to declare what they bought. This is to make sure everyone follows the rules and does not use the policy, for business purposes.

The government says this new rule is part of a plan to make travel rules better make it easier for people to move around and make Indian airports as good as airports in other countries. The people in charge have made it clear that each person can only bring an amount of stuff and you cannot share this with other travelers or give it to someone else. The government wants Indian airports to be more competitive with airports, around the world.

As people travel to countries more and more in 2026 the higher duty-free allowance is a good thing for international travel. It makes things easier for people who travel internationally while still making sure the rules are followed. The people in charge are telling travellers to keep their receipts and tell the truth about what they bought so they do not get in trouble or have to wait at customs when they get back. International travel is getting easier, with this rule. International travellers should always follow the rules when they travel internationally.

Overall, the ₹75,000 duty-free limit marks a progressive shift in India’s travel and customs policy, reflecting changing consumer behaviour and the realities of modern global mobility.
