Air Quality Deteriorates Across North India as Cold Wave Traps Pollution

TOPSHOT - Indian visitors walk through the courtyard of Jama Masjid amid heavy smog in the old quarters of New Delhi on November 8, 2017. Delhi shut all primary schools on November 8 as pollution levels hit nearly 30 times the World Health Organization safe level, prompting doctors in the Indian capital to warn of a public health emergency. Dense grey smog shrouded the roads of the world's most polluted capital, where many pedestrians and bikers wore masks or covered their mouths with handkerchiefs and scarves. / AFP PHOTO / Sajjad HUSSAIN (Photo credit should read SAJJAD HUSSAIN/AFP/Getty Images)

The air in north India got really bad today. This happened because it is very cold and the wind is not blowing much. So all the bad stuff in the air got stuck near the ground. Cities like Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Lucknow and Chandigarh had bad air quality. This is a problem for the health of the people who live in these cities. The air quality in these cities was so bad that it is a concern for millions of people who live there. The bad air quality, in north India is causing problems for a lot of people.

The Central Pollution Control Board has some information about the air in Delhi. The Air Quality Index in Delhi is really bad at a lot of places where they check the air. The bad things in the air like PM2.5 and PM10 are way too high. People who know about this stuff think it is because of cars and trucks on the road factories, people burning biomass in states and the weather is not helping. The Air Quality Index, in Delhi is still very severe. Delhis air is not good to breathe because of all these things, including the PM2.5 and PM10 levels.

The India Meteorological Department said that it is really cold and the air is not moving. The bad things we put in the air are not going away. This happens a lot during the winter like from December to January, when the cold air near the ground keeps the air up high and that keeps the pollution close to the ground, which is bad for the India Meteorological Department to see because the pollution from things, like cars and factories does not get a chance to go away and that is what the India Meteorological Department is talking about.

People who take care of our health say that kids, people and those with breathing or heart problems should not go outside too much. If you are outside for a time when the air is really bad it can make your asthma, bronchitis and other breathing problems worse. The hospitals here have seen more people coming in who are having trouble breathing their eyes are irritated and they have a cough that will not go away. Health professionals are worried about the health of residents, children, the elderly and those, with respiratory or heart conditions and they want them to stay inside when the air is bad.

The air in Delhi-NCR is getting really bad. So the people in charge are doing something about it. They are following the Graded Response Action Plan, which is also called GRAP. This means they are stopping some construction work checking cars to see if they are polluting the air and telling people to work from home if they can. The officials are also asking people to not travel unless they really need to and to not use their cars. They want people to help keep the air clean, in Delhi-NCR by following these rules and using the Graded Response Action Plan or GRAP.

Environmental experts say that emergency measures only help for a while. We need long-term solutions to deal with the pollution that happens every winter. This means we have to make our public transport better. We also need to start using fuels. The rules for industries that release stuff into the air need to be stricter.. We have to do a better job of managing the burning of agricultural residue in the states, around us. Environmental experts think that these things are necessary to tackle the recurring winter pollution.

The problem of air pollution is being talked about again. People are discussing how to manage air pollution and who’s responsible for it. Citizens and groups that support a cause are using media to ask for tougher action, on laws that control pollution. They want the government and state governments to work together more closely on air pollution management. They think this will help solve the problem of air pollution.

The air quality is not going to be good for the few days. This is what the forecasts say. The air quality may remain poor unless we get winds or it rains. The strong winds or rainfall can help get rid of the pollutants in the air.

The authorities want people to check the official air quality updates so they know what is going on. The authorities also want people to take care of their health by taking some precautions. The air quality forecasts are important for people to stay healthy. The authorities are telling people to stay informed, about the air quality.

As north India continues to battle severe winter pollution, the episode highlights the urgent need for sustainable urban planning and environmental policies to ensure cleaner air and better quality of life for future generations.
